Every family deserves a safe place to call home. This was the belief that inspired me to start WholeStory Hammocks. This belief turned into our mission of alleviating families from extreme poverty. I was looking for a product and location where I could have to most impact on the people who most needed it.
Nicaragua seemed like the perfect place to start. Nicaragua is the 2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere with 46% of the population is below the poverty line, living on less than $2 a day. Yet I also discovered that Nicaragua is home to artisans who make some of the most beautiful hammocks in the world. I saw an opportunity and ran with it.
I jumped on a plane to Nicaragua in hopes of starting a hammock company that would help those in need. I first met the Suazo family in Masaya, Nicaragua. This family had been hand-making hammocks for over 80 years. After seeing the skill and artistry that went into each individual hammock I fell in love with the product and wanted to share these amazing hammocks with the world.
When I returned to the States, I created a simple business model that would allow customers to be the key catalyst in the impact the company created. When you purchase a WholeStory hammock you are helping employee artisans in Nicaragua with fair wages and helping build a home for a family in need. The name WholeStory comes out of the believe that we want our customers to know the WholeStory behind your hammock and the impact you have with your purchase. Thank you all for playing an intrical part in WholeStory.
